Gutsy Kid Makes Things Happen!

12-year-old William* was on a
mission. With tattered shoes and a quiet voice he approached Union Rescue Mission’s CEO Andy Bales’ office. This big-hearted boy had a proposal. “Andy, can you help me out?” he asked.

William and several other homeless children at the Mission were about to start school. But although they had been receiving special tutoring from our Child counselors, and their math and reading skills were grade-level or better, William just did not feel fully prepared.

In the classroom and on the playground, you need a decent pair of pants that fit, a clean shirt, and a warm jacket to blend in. Buying clothing is a stretch for all homeless families, and moms do all they can to provide the basics.

But for the poorest students in Los Angeles, it’s always their shoes that give them away.

With all the stress of school, homeless kids shouldn’t have to be rejected because of what they wear on their feet.

Because of one boy’s request, and with gifts from friends like you, 44 needy little feet hopped off to school in brand-new shoes!

William’s thankfulness was for more than his own shoes. He treasured the fact that he had helped play a role in blessing the other boys and girls at the Mission.

Please help support our littlest homeless guests at Union Rescue Mission. Pray for our youth workers and for the future of compassionate boys like William.
