Mommy, why do they sleep on the ground?


 

Shondelle* and her three little children ages 4, 5 and 6 had been living in a very crowded apartment where strangers were moving in and out regularly. This devoted mom became concerned about how the frequent conflicts among the tenants were affecting her children. She started looking for alternative housing, but on her meager salary, could not afford even a single room in Los Angeles.

To make ends meet, this struggling mom took on a variety of short-term part-time jobs whenever she could, juggling childcare with work.

“I called a lot of other places, but Union Rescue Mission was the only one available for me to come to,” Shondelle recalled.

Imagine the uncertainty Shondelle faced the first time she navigated the crowded sidewalks of Skid Row to come to Union Rescue Mission. When her children asked, “Mommy, why do they sleep out there on the ground?” all she could think was, We could have been in the same position.
